Rahul, Thilini win 3rd Lagos International Badminton Classics

It was a perfect moment for both Rahul Chitta Boina (India) and Thilini Hendahewa (Srilanka) who both exhibited scintillating performances in the finals of the Lagos International Badminton Classics that ended yesterday in Lagos Nigeria.

The 3-Day international tournament which served off at the Teslim Balogun stadium, Surulere, Lagos from Thursday 27th-29th July, 2017 paraded star-studded players from over 15 countries who all came to battle for supremacy.

The indoor of the event was filled to its capacity as Badminton enthusiasts besieged  the hall to supports and cheer their own to victory.

Meanwhile, in the finals of the Men’s Single category, Rahul Chitta Boina (Srilanka) spanked his counterpart Karan Rajan (India), 21-15, 21-13 to clinch the coveted trophy and the cash prize.

Rahul who crashed out in the quarter-final of the Russian Open last said the Russian Open was like a training session which prepared him ahead of this tournament in Lagos.

“l just crashed out of Russian Open last week which I see as a kind preparation for this tournament. Although, it was easy making it this far as I met a good and tough opponent who gave me a little drill but above all, I won and that’s the most important thing”. he opined

“After leaving Nigeria, I’m competing in the Vietnam Open in the next couples of weeks where I hope to increase my ranking”.

“Many thanks to my coach and my parents for unflinching supports and encouragement I’ve been accorded so far”.

The Women’s Singles was no different from the opposite gender with Thalini Hendehewa (Srilanka) defeating her opponent Mugdha Agrey (India), (21-13, 20-19) in tension soaked game to lift the trophy.

The year one student of Srilanka College of Arts described her experience in the final of the game as a tedious one and her first international challenge.

“I’m very delighted to have won the trophy being my first international tournament and I’m happy to win this for my country”. she stated
